Herbal Treatments for Acne

Herbal Treatments for Acne

Do you suffer from major acne outbreaks? Have you tried every acne drug on the market, yet nothing has really worked? Perhaps some of the more powerful acne drugs did work, but the side effects are too severe for you to continue the medication. Whatever the case is, drugs are not the only way to treat severe acne. There are natural herbal alternatives that can help treat acne in a much safer and more holistic way.

Tea tree oil

Tea tree oil is one of the more popular and effective herbal acne treatments. Tea tree oil contains an ingredient known as terpinen-4-ol, which has anti-bacterial properties. Applying tea tree oil topically to your acne kills the bacteria so that it goes away faster.

Dong quai

The Chinese herb dong quai seems to work as an antibiotic, helping to keep acne bacteria from developing. The herb is also found in Japan and Korea. Dong quai is also used to treat a number of other conditions, including menstruation issues. A scientific study in 2003 showed that dong quai does in fact contain acne-fighting ingredients.

Guggul is an herb used in traditional Indian medicine. It is believed to help those with particularly oily faces. A study in 1994 showed that participants with cystic acne, a severe type of acne, saw a marked reduction of acne lesions after taking guggul supplements for three months.

Other alternative acne treatments include taking zinc supplements, which reduce inflammation, and taking brewer's yeast, also known to decrease acne. Talk to your dermatologist about any herbal or alternative treatments you are thinking about taking to ensure that you know all of the side effects and to determine what may work best for you.
